Overview
Connecting Google Search Console to Ascend gives you access to your actual search performance data. This transforms how you create content briefs — instead of guessing what to write about, you can base decisions on real data about what your audience is already searching for.
Why Connect Google Search Console?
Identify Content Gaps
Discover keywords you're ranking for but haven't created dedicated content for yet.
Find Quick Wins
Spot keywords on page 2-3 that need a little push to reach page 1.
Data-Driven Briefs
Create content briefs based on actual search performance, not guesswork.
Requirements
Before you start:
- 1A Google account with access to Google Search Console
- 2Owner or Full User access to at least one GSC property
- 3The website must be verified in Search Console
- 4Some historical data (ideally 3+ months) for meaningful insights
Start OAuth Flow
Ascend uses Google's OAuth 2.0 for secure, read-only access to your Search Console data. You'll authorize Ascend to view your search analytics.
Go to Integrations
In Ascend, navigate to Settings → Integrations → Google Search Console.
Click "Connect Google Search Console"
You'll be redirected to Google's OAuth consent screen.
Sign in with Google
Use the Google account that has access to your Search Console properties.
Review permissions
Ascend requests read-only access to view your Search Console data. Click "Allow" to proceed.
Select Properties
After authorization, Ascend will fetch all Search Console properties you have access to. Select which ones you want to import data from.
Select Properties to Import
example.com
Domain property
https://www.example.com
URL-prefix property
https://blog.example.com
URL-prefix property
You can add or remove properties later from your integration settings.
Import Data
Ascend will now import your Search Console data. This includes search queries, page performance, click-through rates, and position data.
What Gets Imported
Note: Initial import may take a few minutes depending on the amount of data. Subsequent syncs are faster and happen automatically daily.
What Data You'll See
Once connected, you'll have access to powerful insights in your Ascend dashboard:
Rankings Dashboard
See all your ranking keywords with position changes, impressions, and clicks. Filter by page, query, country, or date range.
Content Opportunities
Discover keywords you're ranking for (positions 4-20) that could benefit from dedicated content. These represent quick wins for improved rankings.
Underperforming Content
Identify pages with high impressions but low CTR — these need better titles and meta descriptions.
Using GSC Data in Briefs
The real power comes from using this data when creating content briefs:
Creating Data-Driven Briefs
Start from Keywords
Go to Rankings → find keywords with positions 4-15
One-Click Brief Creation
Click "Create Brief" next to any keyword to generate a content brief
Compare with Competitors
Ascend analyzes both your current performance and competitor content
Track Improvement
After publishing, track how your rankings improve for that keyword
Troubleshooting
Having trouble? Here are solutions to common Google Search Console integration issues:
No properties showing up
Make sure you have verified site ownership in Google Search Console. You need to be either an Owner or Full User of the property.
OAuth consent screen error
If you see an 'app not verified' warning, click 'Advanced' and then 'Go to Ascend (unsafe)' to proceed. This is normal for OAuth apps in development.
Data is stale or missing
Google Search Console data is typically delayed by 2-3 days. Also check that you've selected the correct date range in Ascend.
Permission denied error
Ensure you're signing in with the same Google account that has access to your Search Console properties.
