What is Featured Snippet?
A featured snippet is a special search result that appears at the top of Google's organic results ("position zero"), displaying a direct answer to a query extracted from a web page, along with the page's title and URL.
Featured snippets are enhanced search results where Google extracts and prominently displays content from a web page to directly answer a user's query. They appear above the standard organic results in what's often called "position zero," giving the featured page exceptional visibility and click-through potential.
Featured snippets come in several formats:
- Paragraph snippets: A text block answering "what is" or "why" queries (most common, ~82% of snippets)
- List snippets: Ordered or unordered lists for "how to" or "best of" queries
- Table snippets: Data formatted in tables for comparison or statistical queries
- Video snippets: YouTube video clips for tutorial-type queries
To optimize for featured snippets, your content should: directly answer the target question concisely (40-60 words for paragraph snippets), use proper heading structure (the question as an H2/H3), provide the answer immediately after the heading, use lists and tables where appropriate, and already rank on page one for the target keyword.
It's worth noting that Google can pull featured snippets from any page ranking on page one, not just the #1 result. This means featured snippet optimization can leapfrog your content from position 5-10 directly to position zero.
Why it matters for SEO
Featured snippets capture a disproportionate share of clicks on the SERP — studies show they earn 8-12% of all clicks for their queries. Winning a featured snippet dramatically increases visibility, establishes your brand as an authority, and can double your organic CTR compared to a standard position-one ranking. They're also becoming more important as Google integrates them into AI Overviews and voice search responses.
