What is E-E-A-T?
E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness — Google's framework for evaluating content quality, particularly for topics where accuracy and reliability are critical (YMYL topics).
E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) is a framework from Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines that human quality raters use to evaluate content quality. While not a direct algorithm or ranking factor, it reflects the qualities Google's algorithms aim to identify and reward.
The four components are:
- Experience: Added in 2022, this evaluates whether the content creator has first-hand, real-world experience with the topic. A product review from someone who actually used the product scores higher than one based on speculation.
- Expertise: Does the creator have knowledge and skill in the subject area? For YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics like health or finance, formal qualifications matter. For other topics, demonstrated knowledge through comprehensive coverage suffices.
- Authoritativeness: Is the creator or website recognized as a go-to source for this topic? This is reflected through backlinks, mentions, citations, and reputation in the field.
- Trustworthiness: The most important component — is the content accurate, honest, and safe? This includes transparency about the author, proper sourcing, secure website (HTTPS), and clear editorial standards.
E-E-A-T is especially important for YMYL content (health, finance, legal, safety), where inaccurate information could genuinely harm users. Google holds these topics to a higher standard.
Why it matters for SEO
E-E-A-T represents Google's attempt to surface content from genuine experts and trustworthy sources. As AI-generated content floods the web, E-E-A-T signals become more valuable for differentiating authoritative human expertise from commodity content. Sites that invest in demonstrating E-E-A-T — through author bios, expert credentials, transparent sourcing, and genuine experience — are increasingly protected from algorithm updates and AI competition.
